Steroids

Steroids are synthetic compounds that come from the male sex hormone, testosterone. Unlike other drugs, steroids alter the user's body instead of mind. Athletes often use steroids to build muscle mass.

Slang Terms

Steroids are often called "juice" or "roids". The violent behavior steroid users sometimes display is known as "roid rage". When users take more than the recommended medical dosage it is called "stacking".

How do Steroids Affect the Body?

Steroids copy the effects of testosterone. They cause an immediate increase in muscle size and strength. These effects are only temporary, and muscles will return to normal when steroid use is discontinued.
Some other immediate effects of steroids are acne, aggressive behavior ("roid rage"), and elevated body temperature, headaches, irregular heartbeat and nosebleeds.
After long periods of time, steroids can cause bad breath, baldness or unnatural hair growth, coronary hear disease, depression, paranoia, reproductive disorders, high blood pressure, increase in cholesterol levels, insomnia, kidney disease and gallstones, liver cancer, stunted growth of bones and water retention.
