Worship Committee

You made us Lord, and we are yours.  Grant that we may so use your gifts that all creatures may enjoy the harmony you planned.

New Zealand Prayer Book

7th Sunday after Epiphany

As we journey through the Epiphany season may we keep this collect in our minds and hearts.

A reprise of the Christmas season and a special thank you to all who made it possible.

St. Nicholas Day was a great success.  Fr. Bud has really taken over the character of the Bishop of Myra.  We all enjoyed the Christmas packages and the gold coins.  A big thanks to Fr. Bud and the Worship Committee.

The decoration of the church for the Advent, Christmas and Epiphany season were exquisite.  A special thanks to Fr. Bud, Susan Rosa and all of the volunteer committee.  We certainly appreciate all of the high wire activity that went on.

Rev. Anne’s installation was a nice addition to the Advent season.  Bishop Harry reminded us “the Messiah is among us”.  To me that means that each of us has a messianic duty to perform and we must always be on the outlook for it.  Listening for God’s call!  The message is only heard when we all spread it.  We all enjoyed each other’s company at the brunch that followed.

Our Christmas Eve services were a fitting beginning to Christmas Day and the season of Christmas.  The special music was inspiring and the choir outdid itself – angels from on high!  Thank you musicians and the choir.

Epiphany let us all join together in a parish party.  The food was some of the best yet.  The skit on the “Light” found in Bible passages was a hoot.  If you missed the “Best Parish Party of the Year”, plan ahead for next year!

Now back to the Epiphany season and February.  I hope you will all find time to participate in the Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration to be held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ on January 19th at 7:00 p.m.  Did you know Martin Luther King, Jr., is remembered by the Episcopalians in our book of Lesser Feats and Fasts?

On the second of February we celebrate The Presentation of Our Lord Jesus Christ in The Temple.  Now we are beginning to follow in Jesus’ footsteps as he ministers to the Jewish people and to US.  This is a good time for us to listen for “the call”.

I hope everyone has read the interview with Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold published in the January 2003 issue of Episcopal Life.  He gives us some very interesting insights into our Episcopal Church.  If you put it aside, dig it out and read it.

February allows us some breathing space before Lent begins.  Can you believe that Ash Wednesday is March 5th?  We will observe Ash Wednesday with a morning and evening Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes.

I would like to personally thank everyone who has helped in the worship of Trinity for the last ten plus years - the committee members, parishioners, and those who volunteer for specific tasks.  I have resigned as chair of the Worship Committee as of the January meeting.  I have enjoyed serving in this capacity and now it’s time to move on to other things.

“Taste and see that the Lord is good!”

(Psalm 34:8)

Gloria Cole, Chair

Next time you see her, please be sure to give Gloria your heartfelt thanks for her many years of work with the Worship Committee

PWCC Ministry Update

Four joyous Christmas Eve Eucharist Services closed the 2002 ministry up on the hill with the women at P.W.C.C.  Gloria Cole was the homilist and the Rev. Diane presided.  The time flew by and the fourth service was as joy filled as the first.  We were blessed with both our regular attendees and many new faces.  As far as we know we were the only Christmas Eve service offered.

We resumed our regular weekly classes on January 5th and plan to celebrate the Eucharist four times each month.  To help the women on their spiritual journey, the Rev. Sandy Casey-Martus will join us on February 1st to present more information on Centering Prayer.

If you have any interest in exploring this very rewarding ministry, the next required orientation will be held this spring.  Please let us know and we will help you explore and discern.

Cans for Camp

To date we have received about $33 from recycling cans.  In addition to the recycling, Sue Kase (with the help of her grandkids Joby and Stormy) has been hosting bake sales to raise scholarship money.  About $80 has been raised so far!  Keep those cans and sweet teeth coming!

Our Gathering Place Director’s Update

What’s Happening With Youth?

Have you ever felt as if you were in the right place at the right time?  The other day at Our Gathering place I felt that.  The mood was friendly and light and of the 72 high school students we served that day there were kids eating, playing pool, joking with my 6 year old, talking with me about school, and generally enjoying themselves.  At that moment I was so grateful to have had a part in making OGP what it is.  The reason I’m sharing this with you is to thank you.  On behalf of all those students and more, thank you for making OGP possible.  With your support we have created a place that helps to keep kids safe, warm, and off the street in the critical after-school hours when juvenile crime rates normally double.  I have had students tell me that some days the snacks they get here are the only thing they get to eat.  I have been able to help students find services when they are in need of a place to live or in trouble.  I have had kids thank me and tell me how much they appreciate the program.  I just wanted you to know that you are part of an effort that has helped to reduce the downtown area crime rate by 80% during our hours of operation.  Because of the parish of Trinity, Pocatello’s kids are safer, warmer, more cared for, and less hungry.  This is something we can all be proud of!

If you would like to volunteer or be directly involved with OGP in another way, please contact Amy at the church office.  Thank you!

Come Play With Us!

Keep your calendars open the last weekend of January and come learn about Godly Play with Ranee’ Reitz from the Diocese and Sue Kase who is our very own accredited Godly Play instructor.  This two-day workshop is for anyone who is interested in the program.  Even if you don’t want to teach or don’t want to commit a lot of time to the program, come and find out what your children will be learning!  After the two sessions you will understand why Godly Play is such an effective and positive means of religious education, and most of all you will get to play with the toys (something Ann Smalley and I have enjoyed doing every time a box gets delivered!).  The program is based around beautifully crafted toys as well as a true respect for a child’s learning process and natural curiosity.  The results are sure to impress you and your children as much as they have us.  The training will be held in the parish hall:

Friday, January 31

from 6:00 – 8:00 pm &

Saturday, February 1

from 9:30 am – 12:30 pm

The Friday session will answer questions about the program and the Saturday session will go into more detail concerning teaching methods.  You are welcome to attend one or both.  Please contact the church office (233-2640) to reserve a spot.

Don’t miss this FREE & FUN weekend!

Parish Life

Happy New Year!  We made it through the busy month of December.  I want to thank all of you who turned out for Advent wreaths and the Winter Parish Breakfast and all who brought food and helped out at the installation reception.  That's just about everybody!

Sunday, January 5th, we celebrated Epiphany with our annual dinner and the end of the twelve days of Christmas.  Meatballs were the main dish and many delicious side dishes were shared by all!  Rita Haggardt was the keeper of the ring and provided the cakes.  Gene Kurtz was the keeper of the thimble and has cross-stitched a beautiful scroll of the Last Supper for our church.  And Olivia Gonet was the keeper of the dime and has earned money this past year to be donated to the church.  The "keepers" for next year:  Ring - Olivia Gonet (I tried to keep that piece of cake from our table!), the Thimble - Peggy Cook, and the Dime - Franklin Cole.

Parish Life has no activities planned for February (Easter is later this year!) but that might change if I think up something new to fill the gap!  So keep your eyes and ears open!

Looking ahead:  The Pancake Supper will be Tuesday, March 4th hosted and cooked by, the Vestry.  The Seder Dinner will be Wednesday, April 16th.  We will need a host for this one (I won't be attending this year).  Look for the sign-up sheet in March!

Peace,

Theresa Gonet

Remember Middlers??

Remember how much fun we had?   Are you in the winter doldrums, too?

If you are interested in joining a fun group of people for snacks and drinks and conversation, please join me Saturday, February 1 at 7:00 p.m. at my home (3311 East Center) to talk about getting this group going again.  I’ll have cheese, soft drinks, and at least one bottle of a fairly good Merlot.  Those attending are asked to bring munchies and whatever else you want to drink.

Possible agenda items:

1.                  Let’s consider a new name,

2.                  Location of the next gathering

The former Middlers Group was designed for “mature” adults, but I have no concerns about others joining in.

Any questions?  Call Diane Hutchinson at 234-1680.

Stewardship

Thanks to all who donated time and talent on their pledge cards for 2003.  We had a fairly long list when all was tallied.  These lists were broken down by committee or group and have been distributed to mailboxes in the office.  Chairs of various committees/groups should check their mailboxes.  You may be surprised to find new volunteers ready to go to work.

On the other hand, if you are one of those who volunteered and haven't been called yet, please take it upon yourself to get the committee chair's name and give them a call.  Thank you.

Bits & Pieces

The Episcopal Community of Idaho Falls (formerly St. John’s & St. Mark’s) has voted to name their parish St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.  The parish is still located in the building at 270 N. Placer, Idaho Falls.

In the News

v     Chick Bilyeu made the 12/14/02 Journal’s “20 Questions” feature.  He Chick!  We’re still waiting for that lottery windfall!

v     Sue Kase was the lucky winner of the $500 Fred Meyer gift certificate from the raffle for the Stained Glass Window Fund.  What a great Christmas present!

v     Ken Newhouse was one of the doctors that went to Huanuco, Peru to provide free orthopedic services to indigent Peruvian patients.  He is quoted in the 11/26/02 Journal:  “There’s a huge medical need in that area of the world.  We have a great medical community that will commit to a long-term service in that area.  I would really like to go again.”

v     Thank you to Mike Peterson for donating a radio/cassette player to the nursery!  Mike attends St. John’s in American Falls.

I so enjoyed the thoughtfulness of such wonderful young people – Job’s Daughters Bethel #32 and the Youth of Trinity who made and delivered to me a most generous and lovely box of delicious cookies.  I thoroughly enjoyed not only the gift, but also the young people’s warm and pleasant personalities.  It was so special to be remembered.
